At 21%, the language teaching strategy of vocabulary checks was used the most by teachers and in several different ways. One participant predicted that the students in her class would not know what a particular word meant which was crucial to the students understanding a story. The teacher chose to show the class a picture of the word. This is a strategy that might have helped to make the word easier for students to understand and remember (Bloor 1991). Vygotsky (1978) adds that for young learners in the early stages of development there is a close bond between what they see and meaning.
