Research Design
Learning Objectives
After studying this chapter, you should be able to do the following:
*Discuss the three major research designs, or modes of inquiry.
And their strengths and weaknesses
*Understand the relationship and differences between a population and a sample
*Discuss the different types of probability and nonprobability sampling techniques
*Describe how to select an appropriate sample size
*Discuss the concept of reliability and its types
*Discuss the concept of validity and its types
The next step the research process is to establish the research design---that is, the structural component. In this step, the researcher designs a study to answer the questions created in the earlier steps. To do so, the researcher chooses a type of research design (qualitative, quantitative, or mixed-methods); performs sampling, which means selecting subjects to be used in the study; and assures that the study’s findings will be both reliable and valid.
