3. How long had De Kersauson been at sea when the giant squid attacked his boat ?
2 On 15 January 2003, De Kersauson left France on his yacht, the Geronimo. After just six hours at sea, the Geronimo suddenly slowed down. De Kersauson didn’t know why the yacht had slowed down. He looked over the side of the Geronimo, and saw a giant squid. It was attacking his yacht! Fortunately, when De Kersauson stopped the Geronimo, the squid let go and swam away.
3 Very few giant squid have ever been seen. Dead ones are sometimes caught in the nets of fishing boats, or washed up on beaches. But scientists have never been able to study a living giant squid, and know very little about them. However, they think that giant squid live 1,500 metres beneath the sea and eat big fish and whales.
4 Luckily for Olivier De Kersauson, the giant squid that attacked his yacht wasn’t very hungry!
