Effect of β-glucan on growth of Aspergillus
To study the influence of β-glucan on the growth of Aspergillus,
A. fumigatus and A. oryzae were cultured in a
C-limiting medium, a synthetic medium with either β-
glucan or sucrose as a carbon source. The β-glucan added
was curdlan or laminarin. The medium containing sucrose
was used as the control medium. In the curdlanadded
culture, promotion of growth, evidenced by an
increase in turbidity, was observed compared with the
control and glucose-added culture. A marked increase
in growth was observed on the fifth day (Fig. 1). In the
laminarin-containing culture, growth was also promoted.
However, the increase was not as marked as in the culture
with curdlan.
