The purpose of our ongoing research is to tackle the conceptual and practical challenges inherent in the assumption that WBE serves as a protective factor for youthin the face of adversity,includingdisengagement from school. The specific purpose of this case study was to describe and compare the role of WBE in the resiliencedemonstratedbytwoat-riskyouthlearningin the workplace. Both were enrolled in WBE programs recognized as exemplaryfor at-risk youth [16] and had been placed in workplaces the program administrators judged likely to promote resilience. Each multipleperspective case study includes the perspective of the youth, the workplace employer, and the work-based educator, and highlights how supportive adults and an at-risk youth engage in interactions that facilitate the emergence of resilience in the workplace. These cases suggestthat risk and resilienceare contextspecific, and implythatat-riskyouthmayrequiretailoredworkplace programs to meet their career development needs.
