Shade balls, answer to Turkey's drought problems? - A Turkish businessman tells of advantages of shade balls to prevent drought, protect the environment and wildlife
A small plastic ball could help solve Turkey's drought problem which the country has experienced over the last six years causing approximately 25 percent water loss in reservoirs due to evaporation.
When an Ankara-based Turkish businessman began manufacturing the small plastic ball in 2014, known as a “shade ball” to be used on water to fight drought, Turkish companies largely ignored and dismissed it until the Los Angeles Municipality began using them to protect the city's water supply.
Los Angeles is the first city in the U.S. to use shade balls to protect its water resources. The LA municipality aims to conserve 300 million gallons of water every year with the shade balls which prevent evaporation by around 85-90 percent.
In Los Angeles, 20,000 weighted balls were released into reservoirs, bringing the total number of balls layered across the top of the reservoir's water surface to 96 million.
Erkan Koca, the world's third manufacturer of the shade ball after U.S. and China, explained to Anadolu Agency on Tuesday how the balls can be used for a variety of purposes to help the environment and wildlife in Turkey.
"Firstly they can be used to fight against drought in reservoirs because in summer almost 25 percent of the reservoir's water evaporates, but when a shade ball is used, much of the sunlight is prevented from hitting the water, chemical reactions are halted and evaporation is cut down," Koca said.
Secondly, the shade balls can be used in the cooling ponds of nuclear power plants protecting the air and the immediate locality.
"Another important use is in animal welfare. Water resources around airports attract lots of birds to replenish their thirst. Numerous accidents between these wildlife and airplanes have been widely publicized. When water resources are filled with shade balls, they act as a deterrent to wildlife landing as they are unable to see the water and thus the risk of accidents is eliminated," Koca said.
Due to global warming, Turkey, and in particular the eastern part of the country, face drought challenges during the hot weather.
"The number of balls to be used depends on a reservoir’s size. The most important point is that every summer we can save water resources with shade balls," Koca said.
Despite the lack of enthusiasm shown for the product in his home country, the determined Koca has pressed on with his business and having designed the production machine, the company is now capable of producing around 15,000 shade balls per day.
Koca urges that Turkey opens up to see the benefits of the drought prevention ball as the U.S. does.
Each shade ball costs around $0.30.
