The configuration of the oil–sand slurry produced from wells, combined with the presence of water, carbon dioxide and salts containing Cl−, HCO3− and SO4− ions create an exceptionally corrosive environment for pipework and equipment used to transport these fluids. The corrosive degradation experienced by these transportation lines is accelerated by the erosive mechanism attributed to the sand impingement from the moving slurry, resulting in a synergistic effect know as ‘erosion–corrosion’ [3].
