Within BC, piece rates are used more in basic
silviculture than in incremental silviculture. This
is due to standardization of operations through
silvicultural prescriptions (formerly known as
.
pre-harvesting prescriptions) and a series of puni-
tive rules, such as the so-called ‘85%’ clause -
full payment is not made until the survival rate of
seedlings exceeds 85%. When silvicultural activities expand in scope and scale, increased complexity and uncertainty require the integration of
activities, with the benefits of adopting a salary
system becoming more prevalent. Under such circumstances, contracts take on a longer term so as
to mitigate opportunistic behavior, and internal
structures of a firm tend to be relied upon to a
greater extent.
