Situation Report
Authorities are continuing to search for possible survivors of a major landslide that occurred in northern Snohomish County, Washington, around 1045 PST March 22. The slide blocked SR 350 near Oso, as well as the North Fork of the Stillaguamish River. Emergency authorities have advised residents to evacuate areas along the river due to a high flood threat upstream of the landslide. The natural dam is expected to eventually break, and flood warnings have also been issued for downstream areas westward to Stanwood. The area where the landslip occurred is 26 miles (42 km) northeast of downtown Everett. Governor Jay Inslee has declared a state of emergency in the area.
The slide destroyed up to 30 homes and killed at least three people; 18 others remain missing. Search efforts have been hampered by the loose, wet consistency of the debris, forcing rescuers to use helicopters to survey the scene. Geologists are working to determine if ground operations can be conducted safely. The worst concentration of damage is in the Steelhead Drive area, which is about 4 miles (6 km) east of Oso. The slide is approximately 1 mile (.6 km) long, 135 feet (41 meters) wide, and 180 feet (55 meters) deep.
Although SR 350 is impassable in the area of the landslide, the town of Darrington is accessible from Everett and I-5 via much longer routes along the Mountain Loop Highway or Highway 20/SR 530 through Skagit County.
