This work has demonstrated the covalent immobilization of OpdA on nonwoven polyester textiles and the use of the functionalized fabrics for organophosphate pesticide degradation in un-buffered water. Due to their low cost, high porosity and ease of handling, nonwoven polyester textiles are an excellent choice of carrier for bioremediation enzymes. The immobilized enzyme shows highly desirable properties suitable for field bioremediation applications, including enhanced stability, good activity in un-buffered water, the ability to degrade low concentrations of organophosphate pesticides and reusability in batch or continuous processes. The work demonstrates the potential of the OpdA functionalized fabrics in environmental bioremediation of organophosphate contaminated water.
