The Founding of ASEAN
The Association of Southeast Asian Nations, or ASEAN, was established on 8 August 1967 in Bangkok, Thailand, with the signing of the ASEAN Declaration by the founding countries of ASEAN; namely, Indonesia. Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand. Brunei Darussalam then joined in 1984, Vietnam in 1995, both Lao PDR and Myanmar in 1997, and Cambodia in 1999. The ten compose what are today the member states of ASEAN.
Objectives of ASEAN
The ASEAN Declaration states that the aims and purposes of the Association are to: (1) accelerate economic growth, social progress, and cultural development in the region and (2)promote regional peace and stability through abiding respect for justice and the rule of law in relationship among counties of the region and adherence to the principles of the United Nations Charter.
