3.1.Optimizationofexperimentalvariables
Before thedevelopmentofresponsesurfacemodels,theeffects
of surfactanttype,salttype,equilibrationtimeandtemperatureon
extractionefficiency ofSY,ARandBBwereinvestigated.De-
pending uponthenatureofthesoluteandsurfactantsystem,a
solute canbindtodifferentregionsoftheaggregate.Typically,a
polar moleculecanbindtothesurfaceofmicellesviaelectrostatic
interactionswhilenon-polarmoleculecanpartitionintothehy-
drophobic micellecore.Thepartitiongradeofanunchargedmo-
lecule intothehydrophobicmicellarcorereliesonthemagnitude
of itssolubilizationoraffinity tothemicellecore,themolecule
polarity andthesolutioncomposition.Onceorganicmoleculesare
partitioned intomicellescore,theextractionorseparationofthose
molecules fromthematrixcanbeachievedbyphaseseparationas
occurs inCPE [20].
Severalsurfactantincludingnon-ionic(TritonX-100andTriton
X-114),cationic(CTAB)andanionic(SDS)surfactantweretested
for CPE.Experimentalresultsshowedthatextractionefficiency in
the presenceofSDSorCTABwereverylowforallofdyesbutin
the presenceofTritonX-100orTritonX-114weregoodforBBand
SY.ItwasfoundthatcloudpointextractionofAlluraredismore
efficient inthepresenceofcationicsurfactant,cetyltrimethyl
ammonium bromide(CTAB)andTritonX-100.Theextractionef-
ficiency ofSYandBBremainedconstantinpresenceofCTAB.
Therefore,mixtureofTritonX-100þCTABwaschosenbecauseof
its higherextractionefficiency ascomparedwithothersurfactants.
At pHrangeof3.5–4.5, nearlyalldyemoleculesareinneutralform
and canbeextractedtosurfactantphase.TritonX-100
(C14H22O(C2H4O)n) isanonionicsurfactantthathasahydrophilic
