In 2011, the use of social networks became main stream
in South Africa and in several other African countries.
Social networking became fully embraced by many individuals
and businesses. According to Wronski (in Rijswijck:
2011) ‘South African businesses have flocked to
social networks in 2011—a tipping point has been
reached’. In 2011, South Africa had over 10 million people
on MXit and 4.2 million Facebook users. South Africa till
date is regarded as the leading social network country in
Africa. According to Friedel Coetsee (2012: 1) ‘a report by
a Canadian Research Company, Sysomos, shows that South
Africa’s use of Twitter has hit the 10th spot in the world’.
However Egypt currently has the highest number of
Facebook users in Africa (Table 2).
