4. Being respected
Fifteen participants emphasized the importance of the
ward staff respecting them as unique, fellow human beings
during restraint. Several examples of this behavior by nurses
were perceived as extraordinary. For example, one
participant recalled how a nurse offered him a cup of water
before he requested it and asked him whether he felt the
restraint was too tight, or if he would like to change body
position. Participants said they felt reassured and positive
when staff greeted them and addressed them by name. They
