and sculpting has had a long tradition (thousands of years) in the Indigenous culture. This art form has included rock carving, tree carving, wooden dishes, spears, boomerangs, shields and different creative sculptures for ceremonies. Each carving is representative of a significant aspect of the Indigenous people's history and strong beliefs, especially in relation to the Dreaming.
Carvings and sculptures varied between tribes and greatly depended upon the materials that were available and the tools the people had to work with. Materials used in carving included wood, bark, rocks and plant fibres. Beeswax was also used in sculpting. It is believed that wood carving and sculpting originally began in Northern Queensland, where there is a greater variety of materials.
Today carvings in rocks and trees can still be seen, partially baring markings from the past. There have also been many implements and tools discovered that were thought to once be used for carving and sculpting. Today they have been preserved in museums for all to see.
