It has already
been shown that communities with high wood burner use display
greater respiratory ill health than communities with much lower
levels of wood smoke pollution (Allen et al., 2008; Browning et al.,
1990). Existing research has focused on the adverse health impacts of
open fireplaces used for domestic cooking (Clark et al., 2009;
Hernandez-Garduno et al., 2004), but there is little research so far
on the health impacts associated with the use of open fireplaces for
domestic heating in urban areas, or the use of closed combustion
appliances, such as wood burning stoves.
