Children's slime toy can be 'toxic', researcher says
Parents are being warned about a popular toy known as "slime" .
Adisak Plitapolkarnpim, director of Child Safety Promotion and Injury Prevention Research Centre, said yesterday the toy, sold as a set of ingredients that children mix, was unsafe as some versions contain toxic chemicals.
Slime is a liquid material composed of polymers that help children improve their motor skills.
Dr Adisak's comments came after a Facebook post claiming a girl contracted a blood infection after playing with slime caused public concern.
No confirmation has been made that slime caused the illness, he said.
Several websites offer slime recipes, he said, and some include chemical substances like shaving foam and detergent. Ingredients can include toxic substances like borax and adhesives.
He urged parents to exercise caution when buying a toy online and called on officials to inspect toys sold at stalls near schools to see whether they were safe for children.
