We studied sugarcane bagasse (SB) lime impregnation prior to steam explosion (SE).
•
Ethanol from SSF of pretreated slurry and CH4 from AD of liquid were investigated.
•
Lime improved lignin removal and fiber deconstruction, while inhibitors were low.
•
Lime proved suitable for enzymatic hydrolysis and SSF at high solid concentration.
•
SE alone was more suitable for AD, although CH4 was a minor energy component of SB.
