Harvester ants are more selective when seeds of preferred species are available in larger quantities (Hobbs, 1985; Crist and MacMahon, 1992), as predicted by optimal foraging theory. Casual observations over a number of years in the Kuwait study area indicate that harvester ants collect propagules of a broad range of different plant species. In their review of the ecosystem and community influences of the common harvester ant genus Pogonomyrmex in North America, MacMahon et al. (2000) concluded that little is known about the extent to which these ants serve to disperse seeds.
