The vegetable sector in Ghana has failed to realize its full potential, especially in tomato in attaining yield
comparable to what is pertaining in other countries, in supplying its fruits to processing plants and thus
ensuring the improvements in the livelihoods of tomato farmers. This is due to lack of high yielding
materials. There is therefore the need, to introduce and evaluate some tomato varieties to identify varieties
with good attributes for production by farmers. The objective of the study was to assess some introduced
varieties of tomato in order to select promising types of cultivation. Two field experiments were conducted using 5 varieties: 4 introduced from the USA and the one from Ghana. Data were collected on: days to flowering, plant height, stem length and diameter, growth habit, number of plants harvested, number of marketable fruit, fruit weight, total marketable weight and diseases and pests incidences. There were significant differences in almost all the agronomic traits and yield characteristics as well as among the traits at the two locations. Based on the number of plants per plot, marketable fruits, average fruit weight and plant height, tomato varieties Shasta and CRI-P00 were selected as promising varieties.
