Outcome Measures
Timed chair rise.-As a test of lower extremity function,
subjects were asked to stand and sit as quickly as possible 10
times. The test has been reported to be reliable in persons with
OA (coefficient of variation = 6.8% over three trials); scores
correlate with age, lower extremity strength, and changes in
clinical status (19). The timed stands were done from a metal
folding chair 42 em high and 39 em deep. Subjects received
verbal encouragement throughout the task and were not allowed
to use their hands for support. They performed two trials,
and the faster of the trials was recorded in seconds.
