Significant efforts to chemically modify the CNF to make them compatible with PLA matrices have been investigated. Various cellulose surface modification techniques including silylation, TEMPO oxidation, acetylation and theuse of surfactants have been researched to create possibilities for combining cellulose nanofibers with PLA. However, the mechanical properties of the resulting composites are not as high expectedand the process is time consuming and very expensive. In addition, surface modification of CNF can negatively affect biodegradation ofthe final composites
