People employ different combinations of media use and tend to depend more on a particular medium, which is articulated by the ‘individual media dependency’ of media systems dependency theory (Ball-Rokeach and DeFleur, 1976; Ball-Rokeach,1985). According to this theory, people depend on information that is created, gathered, processed and disseminated by media, which brings about cognitive, affective and behavioural changes. Media dependency can be regarded as a complexity of interactions, including different media exposure and media reliance, because it is presumed that individuals may use several media in combination (Miller and Reese, 1982). In light of this perspective, social media are also believed to be affecting users’ cognition, emotion and behaviour in combination with other media.
