Introduction

Overweight and obesity are notoriously difficult to treat1,2 70 , and therefore identifying
71 opportunities for early prevention is vital. The home environment is thought to be a key
influence on childhood weight trajectories3–5 72 . Parents create the child’s home environment,
and are often involved in weight management interventions5,6 73 . Knowledge of parental
74 characteristics that are associated with a more ‘obesogenic’ home environment may
75 therefore help to understand the origins of the environmental effects and to target or tailor
76 obesity prevention strategies.
