Culture is a system of symbols, meanings, ideas, and emotions that influence people’s experiences. Members of the same culture rely on the same symbols (e.g. letters, signs) to frame their thoughts, expressions, and emotions (e.g. joy, sorrow). Symbols help people communicate, develop attitudes toward life and others, and understand socially accepted behavior. Symbols make culture possible and readable. Although meanings cannot be observed and measured, they can help to understand other’s behavior. For example, in some cultures patting a child on the head is considered to be the center of intellectual power 9e.g. Malaysia), while in other cultures head patting is acceptable. In Poland, for example, patting a child on the head is considered to be a caring and protective gesture.
