Describing routines: Franchisee’s Life
My name is Virginia Jones. Three years ago, my husband and I took up the fast food business; we bought the franchise for a McDonald’s restaurant near Collingwood close to Melbourne City.
Every morning I have to get up very early at 05.30 a.m. It is always an effort for me. I have 20 minutes to think of some list before I get up though Hugh’s snoring is piercing my ears. I live by lists; actually-it’s the best way to keep things organized.
Recently, I’ve been arriving at our McDonald’s restaurant around 8.30 a.m. I’ve learned to use computer in making account now so I’m training one of our floor managers to help me the administration. Eventually, this should give me more time to do other things such as interviewing new staff.
Our restaurant is in a park around two miles near Collingwood. Since we bought the franchise in 1999, we’ve already expended the seating. To run the business professionally, we have to confirm to the McDonald’s standards such as quality, service, cleanliness and value, but the restaurant is our own business. Currently, we employ 35 staff.
Buying this franchise was a big move for us. My husband, Hugh, had to do nine months’ training before we could even be considered for a franchise. We are planning to provide Drive – Through service next year. It will be the first Drive – Through in Collingwood.
My own lunch is salad or chicken sandwich. I have it with a pile of paper work on my desk. At 3 p.m. Hugh will head off to collect Nicky and Oliver from school so I usually end up the day with figures and going home. I’ll cook and supervise the children’s homework in the kitchen. I sometimes end up the day on the sofa knitting with Hugh watching the TV before going to bed.
