BASIC
PHILOSOPHICAL
CONSIDERATIONS
The primary purpose of this text is to discuss practical issues directly related to instrumental music teaching; discussion of philosophy is not to be a major concern. On the other hand, it is virtually impossible to divorce the two since philosophy, in its proper application, should serve as the underlying basis for pedagogical practice. The genuinely successful teacher not only possesses practical knowledge and experience of how to teach; he also has definite views on what should be taught and is able to explain why music should be taught in the schools. Particularly in this era of educational history, ignoring the latter can and has resulted in the elimination of music from numerous school systems.
