Consumption of the major macronutrients and
dietary fibre in the subject’s free-choice diets
remained relatively constant over the course of the
study, except where altered by experimental design,
with few significant variations relative to the preceding
or subsequent control periods (Table I). The
subjects routinely maintained a high fat (providing
approximately 40 per cent of calorific intake) and
moderate plant fibre (approximately 16-21 g per
day) intake during the control periods (Table I).
Dietary fibre intake during period C3 was the highest
recorded for the basal (i.e. non-supplemented) diets
throughout the study, and differed significantly from
the two preceding dietary periods (B, C2) which had
the lowest basal values (Table I). Fat consumption
