Evaluation of the role of macrophages in dissemination
of C. piliforme from the intestine to other organs may be
difficult because successful experimental infection of mice inoculated
orally with C. piliforme requires prior immunosuppression
of the animal. Because immunosuppression alters the
normal function of most facets of host immunity, including
macrophage function, immunosuppressed mice cannot be used
to evaluate the role of macrophages in C. piliforme infection
