JS: In my case, I came all the way to Korea from Hong Kong, a place where although we do hold respect to others, we also have the tendency to treat people as "EVERYBODY'S FRIENDS". That's why when I came to Korea, because you still have to treat the other party as "hyung-nim!" even if they are just one year older than you, I got a culture shock at first. But now I already got to hear about this addressing rule towards older people quite a lot, if there's any younger lad around me, I would jokingly ask them "I am the hyung-nim right?".
