The participants seemed to be motivated by the psychology
of gaming, that is, something was at stake for them in the game.
They could win or lose and they could learn to master the game
by playing it. Outside of the gaming events, their days were filled
with the same activities and variation was scarce. In addition,
any variation in activities often declined over time due to the
participants’ gradual loss of motor and cognition abilities.
