Although the decrease in scould be a consequence of areduction in the water content of tissues, active osmotic adjust-ment was observed in the studied genotypes, and mainly inthe plants grafted onto the tolerant genotypes (12 and 14). Theosmotic adjustment may have involved the accumulation of arange of osmotically active molecules, including organic com-pounds such as sugars, free amino acids, glycinebetaine, solubleproteins, and organic acids (Chaves et al., 2003) and with macronu-trients such as inorganic components (Patakas et al., 2002).
