Bulbs
Bulbs are modified shoots consisting mostly consisting mostly of fleshy storage leaves and a short, thin and flat stem. A bulb is very much like an enlarged bud. It is surrounded by brown scale-like leaves , or modified leaves and roots from the base. Each bud develops and gives rise to leaves and flowers. The food manufactured in the leaves of the new plant is stored in the leaf bases. The leaf bases swell to form a new bulb ready for growth the following year. Hence , each bud gives rise to a new bulb. Adventitious roots are also present. Examples of bulbs are onions and daffodils (Figure 9.22)
