Be a critical thinker. Nurses must be observant to detect changes in their patients' health, take corrective measures in time, and be able to make referrals when required.
Be a good communicator. Effective communication does not only mean talking to patients, but also asking them relevant questions to correctly assess their condition.
Be able to control your emotions. If you can't stand the sight of blood, then the bad news is that this profession is not for you. You need to have a strong stomach and a patient heart.
Be detail-oriented. A good nurse pays attention to detail and is able to make the right decision at the right time.
Be respectful of others. Great nurses are thorough professionals who care for patients irrespective of their color or creed. They do not look at their patients as a number. Behind every number there is a name, a face and a life.
