Cerebrospinal Fluid Findings
All our patients underwent lumbar puncture within the first 24 hours of intensive care unit admission. Raised protein levels (>0.5 g/L) were seen in 11 cases (52.4%). All microbiologic cultures were negative. The cerebrospinal fluid of all included children was further investigated by further polymerase chain reaction for herpes simplex virus type 1 and 2, and all these test results were negative. The result of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay detecting antirubella immunoglobulin (M) was positive in the cerebrospinal fluid for all our patients (normal range below 1.2 IU/mL), whereas only 2 patients (9.5%) had positive immunoglobulin (G) (normal range below 1.6 IU/mL). Results of cerebrospinal fluid samples findings are summarized. Moreover, antirubella immunoglobulin (M) was positive in the serum for all our patients.
