Community
A community may be defined as a geographical area in which people live and interact, usually sharing common values (Pender, Murdaugh, & Parsons, 2002). Communities also include organizations and institutions such as churches, recreational centers, and schools. Within a given community, smaller neighborhoods are formed and often centered around housing developments and public schools. Neighborhoods provide the sociocultural context for daily living, and schools provide the primary arena for socialization of children and adolescents (Perry, Kelder, & Komro, 1993).
