Aims of mathematics education
The mathematical aim of the progressive educator is to contribute to the overall development of the growing human being, to develop the child’s creativity and self realization through the experience of learning mathematics. This involves two things. First, the development of the child as an autonomous inquirer and knower in mathematics. Second, the fostering of the child’s confidence, positive attitudes and self-esteem with regard to mathematics, and shielding the child from negative experiences which might undermine these attitudes.
