3. Results and discussion
3.1. Equilibrium calculations and mechanisms
HgCl2 is a compound with covalent bonds. The linear shape
molecule is hardly dissociated in aqueous solutions [19].
Dissolved HgCl2 has the affinity to form complexes in solution with
suitable electron donor ligands [20,21]. Regarding the composition
of the aqueous phase of FGD waste water; possible ligands for Hg2+
considered in this work are SO3
2, OH and Cl. For known concentrations
of total dissolved divalent mercury (Hg(II)), S(IV), Cl and
OH, distribution diagrams are calculated, using formation constants
for Eq. (1) from literature [22]
