The Export Policy 1997e2002 emphasised wide expansion of
traditional/semi-intensive cultivation of shrimp (Ministry of
Commerce, 1997e2002). Such a target no doubt leads to
increased salinity, which is not allowed under the National Environment
Policy of 1992. Moreover, semi-intensively farmed prawns
have greater risk of antibiotic and pesticide contamination (The
SEAT project, 2009e2013). In fact, this kind of adverse quality
perception resulted in Bangladeshi shrimp receiving a 10% lower
price than the global market average (Ministry ofWater Resources,
1999). These issues have been taken into account in the Export
Policy 2009e12 which has encouraged maintaining ecological
balance while cultivating and increasing the production of shrimp
(Ministry of Commerce, 2009e12).
