Management
General advice for patients with fungal infections
is summarised in Box 1.
Dermatophyte infections The majority of mild
skin infections (tinea corporis, cruris and pedis)
require local, topical therapy with either
imidazole preparations (miconazole and
clotrimazole) or the allylamine, terbinafine.
Most patients require a two-week course of
treatment, extended by up to a week after all
signs of the infection have resolved to ensure
complete clearance (NHS Clinical Knowledge
Summaries (NHS CKS) 2006).
