Melville Louis Kossuth Dewey was born in Adams Center, New York, on December 10, 1851. A librarian and a reformer, Dewey invented the influential Dewey Decimal System of classification. He was also a founder of the American Library Association, The Library Journal and the country's first library school. Dewey died in Lake Placid, Florida, on December 26, 1931.
