There does not appear to be an official definition of head-on crashes in the Austroads literature. A working definition for this report is that a head-on crash refers to an event in which a vehicle departs from its laneway into opposing traffic, such that any portion of the leading edge of its vehicle strikes any portion of the leading edge of an opposing vehicle. This includes the most straight forward head-on collisions, in which the majority of the leading edge of both vehicles collide, as well as offset frontal collisions, in which only a portion of the leading edges collide.
