A PV solar-powered pumping system for residential water supply to the village of Ying (9.7องศาN, 0.8องศาW), near the city of Tamale in northern Ghana, in West Africa, was simulated using NASA SSE solar insolation data and models of the solar modules and pump-motor for this site based on a design by Burkhartzmeyer (Burkhartzmeyer, 2008). The simulation was compared with two other simple design approaches using peak sun hours and an expected ratio of hydraulic energy to rated array power. Both simple design methods result in array sizes that are undersized for several months of the year when insolation is below annual averages.
