Oil dispersants are mixtures of surfactants and solvents which effectively disseminate oil in the water column, creating small oil droplets (GESAMP, 1993). Treatment of oil spills with dispersants in temperate marine environments has become a common practice since many years. A major reasoning for using these chemicals is to prevent spilled oil from arriving ashore. However, an increased toxicity of dispersed oil to marine life as compared to untreated oil is expected as a result of surfactants detrimental effects and elevated hydrocarbon dissolution. Thus, benthic and pelagic organismsmay also be exposed to both oil and dispersant harmful impacts
