Being attentive to the needs of an involuntarily admitted patient in crisis and creating a context of mutual
engagement and trust is difficult. The patient often is restless or aggressive. This complicates getting in contact
with the patient. Moreover, nurses have the responsibility to ensure safety at the ward. This results in
conflicting values and dilemmas. To be able to be attentive to the needs of a patient in crisis, nurses need
courage to take risks and insight into which risks are acceptable. This requires knowledge and experience. In
case of aggression or unsafe situations, nurses are often guided by gut feelings and emotions.
