A typeface is an alphabet (along with numerals and punctuation) considered as aesthetic visual entity. A font is a collection of letterforms in that typeface, and is stored in one file on the computer. One font may contain the alphabet in upper and lower case, with related numerals and punctuation and symbols (see page 48). Several fonts will be required to use a typeface effectively for text setting, typically including at least italic, bold, and bold-italic variants. Many typefaces are available as ‘families’ of several dozen fonts.
