The literature sample was analyzed for areas of
agreement and disagreement across disciplines and
over time. First, the literature was examined for
attributes of the concept by considering the questions
“What are the characteristics of (the concept)?” and
“What is this ‘thing’ the writer is discussing?”
(Rodgers, 2000a, p. 91). Second, data were collected
regarding the temporal context of the concept (antecedents
and consequences) by answering the following
questions: (a) What is happening when health
coaching occurs? and (b) What happens before, after,
and as a consequence of health coaching? (Rodgers,2000a). Third, the contextual basis of the concept was
examined by determining if health coaching is used
differently in various contexts or by different people
(Rodgers, 2000a). Fourth, references that described
situations in which the concept was applied were
identified. Finally, data were analyzed according to the
characteristics above using thematic analysis to identify
major themes in each category by discipline. Areas
of agreement and disagreement were ascertained by
discipline.
