This book is about a woman named Kinsey Millhone. She’s a licensed private investigator. She’s twice divorced and lives in Santa Teresa, California. Her landlord is Henry Pitts. Henry is a retired baker. His Brother William is going to marry her friend Rosie on Thanksgiving Day.

It was Thursday a week before thanksgiving; Henry came to Kinsey to tell her that one of their neighbors had died of a hearth attack 4 to 5 months ago. His name was Mr. Lee, but they used to call him Johnny. Johnny lived with his grandson Bucky and his wife Babe.


Henry told Kinsey that he ran into Bucky a while ago and that he told him that he had a problem. The problem was that Johnny didn’t want a funeral, but he wanted to be cremated, which was done right away. But then it occurred to him that Johnny was entitled to a military burial. Henry said that he guessed that Johnny was a fighter pilot during world war two, part of the American Volunteer Group under Claire Chennault.

His father Chester thought that it sounded pretty good. So Bucky went out to the local Veterans Administration Office and filled out a claim form. He didn’t have all the information but he did what he could. He got the claim back after 3 months. It was marked: ‘‘cannot identify’’. Bucky called the VA, the guy send him another form to complete. The form was a request for military records. The request came back after only 3 weeks with the same rubber stamp. Bucky told Chester what happened. Chester called the Randolph Air Force Base in Texas, which is where the Air force keeps personnel files. They said that they had no record of Johnny Lee, or if they did they wouldn’t talk. They wanted to see Johnny get what he deserved. Kinsey offered to help. Henry left, he went to pickup family members who came for the wedding. He invited Kinsey for dinner. Johnny owned the property free and clear, so he used the money for food, utilities, property taxes and stuff like that. Kinsey asked him if the local VA clinic had a file number for him somewhere. Bucky said that he already went there. Then they went to Johnny’s apartment. Babe called Bucky and told him that they had to leave. Kinsey stayed to search the apartment and the boxes that were on the floor. She found nothing helpful. She heard footsteps. It was Ray Rawson; he was an old friend of Johnny’s. He was looking for Bucky. Ray wanted to rent the place. He said that Bucky was dragging his feet on the rental agreement. Ray wasn’t in the Air Force with Johnny. They met on the job. They both worked shipyards in the old days. It was just after World War two started. They searched some more and left. When Kinsey came home she saw that she had a message on her answering machine, it was form her cousin Tasha. She called Tasha; she asked if Kinsey wanted to spend thanksgiving with her and her family.

Kinsey told her that she was tied up and couldn’t come. They hung up after they had an argument. Kinsey went to the store to buy some groceries. The phone rang when she came back it was Bucky. He told her to come over because someone had broken into Johnny’s apartment. Kinsey went to the apartment. The place was a mess. Chester was very mad because he thought that Kinsey had done it. Kinsey thought that ray could have done it. Chester called the police and told Bucky and Babe to clean up afterwards. Chester and Kinsey went into the house and talked. It wasn’t Bucky, Chester or Ray. The man stepped into a car and drove off. Kinsey followed him. The car parked into the parking lot of a motel. The man went inside. Kinsey waited for a bout 15 minutes. She saw some movement in the apartment when she was about to leave. A woman came out with a suitcase and the duffel bag. They left. Kinsey followed them to the airport. The woman looked like she was about 6 to 7 months pregnant. Kinsey decided to call Bucky to tell him what was going on. Chester picked up the phone and told Kinsey that she should come over immediately. They found Ray crawling down the driveway. His face was bloody, hands swollen up he looked horrible. Her name was Laura Huckaby her destination Palm Beach. The plane landed in Dallas. The steward person came on the intercom with the gate numbers for various connecting flights. She also advised the passengers that the plane would be on the ground before the continuation flight 508 to Palm Beach. If the passengers intended to deplane they’d need to have their boarding passes with them for re boarding purposes. Kinsey followed Laura into a bus. The driver started to name the names he had on a list. When he said Hudson, Laura Huckaby raised her hand. They drove to a hotel. Laura checked in and went to her room. Kinsey lied to the clerk and told her that she was Laura’s sister and that she wanted to stay on the same floor as she did. There was no more room on the 12th floor.
