Whoever heads up the organisation has ultimate responsibility for WHS, but it is quite possible that this responsibility is delegated to a manager like you. Your organisation may have an WHS manager, but if not it becomes the responsibility of whoever is responsible for the area - which may be you.
In relation to WHS, the objectives as a manager are to: • maintain the existing management system
• improve overall WHS performance
• implement a coordinated approach
• Develop a range of management actions to fulfil legislative requirements.
Therefore the responsibilities include: • providing a safe workplace and safe systems of work
• developing, establishing and implementing WHS policies, procedures and practices
• ensuring that WHS procedures and standards are adhered to
• consulting with employees and cooperating with WHS representatives or committees
• identifying hazards and ensuring that employees are fully informed
• being aware of relevant legislation
• arranging for regular inspections
• developing and undertaking a preventative maintenance program • arranging induction and on-going training
• taking all necessary follow-up actions
