In our questionnaire consisting of Likert-type questions
with three choices, we graded responses to the 10 questions relative to physiological adaptation about the affected functions and perceptions as ‘none’, ‘moderate/occasional’, and ‘severe/often’. The points attributed to these responses were, respectively, 0, 1 and 2, with a possible total score range of 0–20. The 19 questions relative to self-concept adaptation consisted of 10 on physical and 9 on personal self-concept. The AEF additionally included six questions concerning role-function adaptation. We formulated the responses to
the self-concept and role-function adaptation questions as ‘do not agreed’, ‘partly agreed’, and ‘entirely agreed’; they were attributed, respectively, 0, 1, and 2 points. The range of the possible total score was thus 0–38 for self-concept adaptation and 0–12 for role-function adaptation. A high score for all sub-dimensions was evaluated as a lack of adaptation (negative adaptation).
